My mangle press was repurposed in 2023 and is used for relief and intaglio printing.
Relief printing uses a raised surface design on the printing block, the rest of the surface is cut away. When ink is applied to the block only the raised portion of the block is inked. The inked image is transferred onto the paper during printing.
One example of relief prints are linocuts.
Intaglio printing uses an incise, or cut, design on a printing plate. When ink is applied to the plate, it is held in the incisions. The remaining surface of the plate is wipped clean. When printing the inked image is drawn out of the cuts onto the paper.
One example of Intaglio is Drypoint on Tetrapak
My press is a coverted 'E W BANK Little giant' 21" table mangle from approximately 1908-1920
The mangle's original purpose was to press household linen and clothing smooth.
Artist have converted mangles by adding metal sleaves to the rollers and runners for the bed.
